Eagle Eye Flow Meter DP Calculation Formula for Precision Monitoring

Quick Answer

For precision monitoring, the Eagle Eye flow meter from Silver Automation Instruments uses the standard DP formula Q = K × √(ΔP). K is set from pipe inside diameter, beta ratio, and fluid density. Gas and steam lines need pressure and temperature compensation to hold accuracy below 1 percent of rate.

This reference gives the formula, field examples, and model selection data for water, steam, and gas service. Use this page as a spec sheet for process monitoring and daily balance checks.

DP Formula and Field Variables

The base liquid formula is Q = K × √(ΔP). Q is volumetric flow in m³/h. ΔP is differential pressure in kPa. K is the meter factor. For mass flow in kg/h, multiply Q by fluid density. The full equation follows ISO 5167.

Qm = C / sqrt(1 - beta^4) x epsilon x pi / 4 x d^2 x sqrt(2 x ΔP x rho)

Where C is discharge coefficient, beta is the diameter ratio, epsilon is expansion factor for gas, d is throat diameter in meters, ΔP is differential pressure in pascals, and rho is density in kg/m³. In practice, Silver Instruments stores these values in the Eagle Eye transmitter menu. You do not recalculate the formula on every shift.

We have seen this on customer sites many times. A water plant in Vietnam ran an Eagle Eye meter on a DN150 line. The DP transmitter ranged 0 to 25 kPa. The flow span was 0 to 160 m³/h. At 9 kPa, the output read 96 m³/h. The local panel matched the SCADA total within 0.6 percent.

Precision Monitoring Setup

Precision monitoring starts with clean input data. Pipe ID must be measured, not copied from a pipe schedule table. One millimeter of error in a DN50 pipe changes flow by about 2 percent. Fluid density should come from a lab sample or an online density meter. Silver Instruments pairs the Eagle Eye with PT100 temperature sensors and 4-20 mA HART pressure transmitters for density compensation.

For steam, use pressure and temperature compensation. The live density rho is calculated from steam tables stored in the flow computer. The flow formula becomes Qm = K × √(ΔP × rho). If you skip temperature compensation on saturated steam, a 5 °C error shifts mass flow by about 1.2 percent. That is enough to fail a daily balance check.

Eagle Eye Flow Meter Hardware Range

Silver Automation Instruments supplies the Eagle Eye DP flow meter with wafer or flanged bodies. Common sizes are DN15, DN25, DN40, DN50, DN80, DN100, DN150, DN200, DN250, and DN300. Process connections cover ANSI 150, ANSI 300, DIN PN16, DIN PN40, and JIS 10K. The transmitter output is 4-20 mA HART with Modbus RTU as an option. ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 versions are available for gas and chemical plants.

The device is used in oil and gas, water and wastewater, chemical, food and beverage, and marine service. A chemical batch plant in Thailand installed 12 Eagle Eye meters on solvent feed lines. Each meter sent 4-20 mA HART to a PLC. The plant reduced dosing errors from 2.5 percent to 0.8 percent after the upgrade.

DP Formula Example for Gas

A gas line in Malaysia runs at 6 bar g, 30 °C, and a flow range of 0 to 1200 kg/h. The Eagle Eye meter has a 0 to 10 kPa DP cell. Dry air density at these conditions is about 7.1 kg/m³. The flow computer calculates Qm = K × √(ΔP × 7.1). At 4 kPa, the mass flow is about 760 kg/h. If pressure and temperature are corrected live, the totalizer error stays below 0.75 percent of rate.

Installation Notes for Precision Monitoring

Straight pipe matters more than transmitter brand. For an orifice or cone DP meter, keep 10D upstream and 5D downstream for standard accuracy. If you have an elbow before the meter, increase upstream run to 20D. Use the same pipe schedule for the impulse lines. Slope gas impulse lines down toward the manifold. Slope liquid impulse lines up so bubbles return to the pipe.

Do not mount the DP transmitter below the pipe in wet gas service. Condensate will collect and shift the zero. In cold regions, add heat tracing on impulse lines. A customer in Chile had a zero shift every morning on a steam meter. The cause was cold impulse legs. After heat tracing, the morning error dropped from 4 percent to less than 0.2 percent.

Model Selection and Price Data

Tell us the fluid, pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size in DN, and flow range in kg/h or m³/h. Silver Automation Instruments will select the correct Eagle Eye meter size, DP cell range, and material. For water lines, we often recommend 316L stainless steel with EPDM seals. For steam, 316L with graphite seals. For a seawater flow meter for desalination plant brine service, super duplex or Monel wetted parts are available. For liquids above 50 cP, send the viscosity so we can correct the K factor.

FAQ

Q: What DP formula does the Eagle Eye flow meter use for water?
A: The Eagle Eye meter uses Q = K × √(ΔP). K is calculated from pipe ID, beta ratio, and fluid density. The transmitter linearizes square root output as 4-20 mA HART.

Q: Can the Eagle Eye flow meter measure steam mass flow?
A: Yes. Use pressure and temperature compensation. The flow computer calculates live density and uses Qm = K × √(ΔP × rho).

Q: What accuracy can I expect for precision monitoring?
A: Standard DP flow accuracy is 1 percent of rate with correct installation and compensation. With wet gas or short straight pipe, expect 1.5 to 2.5 percent.

Q: Which pipe sizes are covered?
A: Silver Instruments stocks the Eagle Eye flow meter from DN15 to DN300. Larger sizes are available on request.

Q: What information do you need for a price quote?
A: Send fluid, pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size in DN, and flow range. We will provide a quote within 24 hours.
